The Monthly Friday Night Yin Club

What better way to kick off the start of the month than with a Friday night Yin session! Designed to shake off the worries of the world from your shoulders and enable you to glide into the rest of the month with a little bit more peace and serenity!

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin is a series of shapes or positions that you hold for 3-5 minutes. So the practice is one of stillness which helps with relaxation, when were you last really still, whilst awake?

Props can help provide additional comfort whilst holding a shape in stillness, but you do not need any fancy kit to enjoy Yin.

Yin yoga’s three principals of working to your edge (the appropriate depth of stretch that is a comfortable effort without strain or over stretch), resolving to be still and holding for some time, aligns to Robert Schleip’s (a leading fascial anatomist,) view of how to keep fascia healthy. He describes the mechanics of healthy fascia as the ability of the fascia to ‘flow, slide and glide.’ Enhancing flexibility and movement.

Who Is Yin For?

Everyone and anyone! Saying that, there is added incentive for those over 40 to take up Yin as a practice because in scientific research carried out by Robert Schleip, it was found that Yin helped reduce inflammation in the body and helped improve circulation. A report released by Frontiers of Psychiatry concluded that Yin yoga helped reduce depression on its test subjects over a 10 week trial period whilst improving quality of sleep.

  • Beginner-Friendly: No prior knowledge or experience of Yin Yoga is necessary.
  • Supportive Postures: All poses are performed lying down and can be supported by equipment as needed.
  • Tissue Restoration: Unlike other yoga practices, Yin Yoga focuses on restoring tissue rather than activating muscles, requiring relaxation and stillness in postures for up to 5 minutes.
  • Clothing Tips: Wear comfortable, layered clothing as Yin Yoga can cause changes in body temperature.
  • Comfort Essentials: Bring a pillow and blanket for additional support, especially for knees; if you have a yoga bolster, feel free to bring it.
  • Eating Guidelines: Avoid eating heavy meals before the session to prevent indigestion; opt for a light snack if needed before attending.

Why Do I Love Yin?

Everything is about balance – Pilates is amazing for working on muscle strength and stability, Yin is amazing for supporting tissue, our fascia, both are important in helping us stay fit as we age. Any movement training you do  is great but you need to work on the tissues too and Yin does just that.
